VidaGroove Reclaimed: Third Generation Timber

Some materials arrive on site brand new. Others arrive with a lifetime behind them.

VidaGroove Reclaimed is one of the latter. A cornerstone of the VidaSpace offering since our inception, this collection of genuinely reclaimed timber has featured in homes, hospitality venues, and commercial spaces across New Zealand for more than a decade.

Sourced from the Great Lakes region of North America, along with reclaimed Spruce from Eastern Europe, the boards were originally part of agricultural barns and rural sheds. These historic structures are carefully dismantled, with the timber salvaged, graded, and milled into install-ready boards ready for a new architectural life.

Reclaimed boards carry the visible traces of their past, and every board is entirely unique. Together, they create surfaces rich with texture and narrative that simply cannot be manufactured. At VidaSpace, we often refer to it as “third generation wood.” Its first life was in the forest, its second in the barn, and its third begins here in New Zealand within the projects it becomes part of.

What makes reclaimed timber so compelling is its unmistakable authenticity. Every board carries the marks of its past – weathered grain, tonal variation, nail holes, and occasionally even remnants of history; we have had installers tell us that they found embedded bullets in the planks. No two boards are ever the same.

This distinction between exterior and interior origin defines the three products within the range. Tempest, drawn from the outermost barn faces, is the most dramatically weathered, deep silvery greys with raw, exposed character. Outpost, from the interior walls, retains that texture but with a warmer, more sheltered tone. Harken, sourced from the interior beams, is the warmest and least weathered of the three, aged and rich rather than raw. Together, they give specifiers a genuine choice in both colour and character.

VidaGroove Reclaimed is most commonly specified as a feature wall or ceiling lining, and can also be integrated into joinery, doors, or furniture, adding a layer of material authenticity within more complex interiors. The range has featured in numerous standout New Zealand projects, including Amano in Auckland and Pask Winery in Hawke’s Bay, where its texture and history help create spaces that feel established and memorable.

Beyond its visual character, reclaimed timber is also an inherently sustainable material. By repurposing wood from existing structures, it extends the life of valuable natural resources. It’s a thoughtful way of honouring the longevity of the material – preserving its history while giving it renewed purpose.

Whether used expansively to create an immersive rustic environment, or introduced as a single feature moment, VidaGroove Reclaimed brings something few materials can: authentic character shaped by time.
