Interview with Emily Smith-Pilling: Specification Consultant

What does your job as a Specification Consultant entail?

My role is to assist interior designers and architects in specifying the right timber material for their projects, and to offer support with any installation or technical information required. 

What do you love about interior design?

I love that a feeling can be created with an interior space. How the colours, furniture, textures, and lighting choices all play a part in evoking an emotion, and how these all need to be carefully considered to achieve the intended outcome. 

Who are your design icons?

I wouldn't say there was a person or group that I would consider an icon, however I get inspired by seeing a range of different interiors, and seeing how people tackle challenges within spaces, and what interesting solutions they come up with. I am always watching Never Too Small and Architectural Digest for inspiration.

What are your favourite projects to work on?

Bespoke projects really interest me. I love collaborating with clients to design something completely unique to their project, whether it’s through custom smoking, staining, textures, or widths. There is something rewarding about being able to be creative with my clients and produce a product personal and tailored to the space they are creating.

What do you love about timber?

I love the warmth timber creates in an interior space, the endless possibilities of the final product from its raw form, and I love that it is truly a renewable source.

What is your favourite VidaSpace product?

My favourite product is often changing, as we have so many gorgeous products!  But at the moment I am drawn to our Querkus Smoked Arabica veneer. I think it is such a beautiful colour.
