Are you using the correct underlay for your wood floor installations?

Installing wood flooring over acoustic underlay

Choosing the right underlay is an important part of installing a wooden floor. Even if your subfloor is perfectly prepared, the underlay serves a variety of functions within the build-up, including moisture vapour control, sound reduction, and even smoothing out any minor lumps and bumps.

You don’t need us to tell you that using the wrong underlay can cause serious problems with the flooring, but you may require our assistance in selecting the best underlay for your project.

Our team has explored some common scenarios in which specific underlays are required and has made recommendations for the best products from our range to use.

Which floating underlay within our range produces the best impact dB reduction?

When it comes to wooden flooring, it’s critical to keep noise and vibrations to a minimum.

We have a variety of underlays that absorb vibrations and help you live or work in a quieter environment.

You’ll often find that projects in high-rise buildings, buildings with high ceilings, and areas with a lot of foot traffic will all require a high-quality acoustic underlay installation.

Our range of acoustic underlays are all suitable for the job, but here’s our team’s top recommendation:

WoodClinic Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay

WoodClinic Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay is our most robust and efficient underlay for reducing impact noise where floor height is at a premium.

WoodClinic™ Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay is an acoustic-rated underlayment designed to reduce noise transfer within the building structure. Constructed using elastomeric rubber mat with recycled rubber components it is ideal for commercial, industrial and residential applications to reduce the sound transmission between floors.

WoodClinic™ Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay is suitable for use in conjunction with engineered timber flooring, ceramic tiles, marble tiles and floor leveling compounds.

WoodClinic™ Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay is available in a roll 5mm thick, 1.2m wide and 10m long.

My timber floor needs to be bonded to the subfloor. Which underlay should I use?

When the flooring manufacturer recommends glue-down installation and you also need to comply with clause G6 in the building code (meeting the minimum standard of sound insulation between occupancies), it’s critical to use the right underlay.

For these types of installations, you need an underlay that will reduce impact sound and allow for the floor to be fully bonded to the substrate, forming more of a defined layer than a floating underlay.

From our selection of acoustic underlays, this is our team’s favourite:

WoodClinic Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay

WoodClinic Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay is our most robust and efficient underlay for reducing impact noise where floor height is at a premium.

WoodClinic™ Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay is available in a roll 5mm thick, 1.2m wide and 10m long.

We have it available in a 5mm thickness, the acoustic underlay is ideal for most subfloor build-ups.

When it comes to bonding the underlay using the best adhesive for the job is just as important as using the right underlay. The flexible properties of the WoodClinic Wood Floor Adhesive add to the strength and sensibility of the build-up making it the ideal solution for bonding both parts of the timber floor installation.

Key details:

  • 5mm thickness
  • Large range of temperature stability.
  • Significantly reduces impact sound. STC Rating of 60, IIC Rating of 64, HIIC Rating of 70
  • Low compression under heavy loads.
  • Performance will vary with different floor build ups. Please see performance data for examples.
  • Recycled rubber content.

What is the best underlay to use with underfloor heating?

With underfloor heating becoming more popular in both residential and commercial settings, it’s critical to match it with the best underlay for the job.

Using the incorrect underlay could cause the underfloor heating system to work inefficiently and may also cause the temperature to rise to dangerous levels, potentially causing problems with the floor covering.

Our team has chosen the best underlay from our selection, and it is:

WoodClinic Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay

Conducting more heat than our other underlays, this is the ideal choice for installations with underfloor heating – bringing a warm glowing feeling to any floor.

A lower ‘thermal conductivity’ rating allows the warmth generated by underfloor heating to efficiently pass through the underlay, evenly distributing across the floor and into the room – saving energy and reducing heating bills.

Key details:

  • 5mm thickness
  • Large range of temperature stability.
  • Significantly reduces impact sound. STC Rating of 60, IIC Rating of 64, HIIC Rating of 70
  • Low compression under heavy loads.
  • Recycled rubber content.
  • Thermal conductivity at 23ºC = 0.106 W/mK
