Set the Stage for a Successful Install

Installing engineered timber flooring is a craft that relies on careful planning, clear communication, and the right conditions. To ensure the best possible outcome both for the installer and the homeowner, it’s critical that all site conditions, materials, and expectations are aligned before the first plank is laid.

This Pre-Installation Checklist has been created to support flooring installers in delivering a premium result and to prompt early conversations with property owners. Working through the checklist before installation begins can help ensure that the product performs as intended and the owner receives the full value of their timber flooring investment.

This resource is designed to accompany every flooring order and help clarify responsibilities around site readiness, material inspection, and customer communication.

1. Site Conditions and Storage

To ensure the product performs to standard, the installation site must meet key environmental conditions before flooring is brought into the space or installed.

  • Job site is fully enclosed and dry.
  • Flooring is stored indoors, ideally in a climate-controlled environment.
  • Site moisture content is less than 14%.
  • Flooring has acclimatised and is within 2% of the installation environment.

2. Material Inspection

Timber is a natural material, and product variation is part of its beauty, but any defects or issues should be picked up before installation begins.

  • Open several boxes to confirm colour and grade are as expected.
  • Notify VidaSpace immediately of any damage, discrepancies, or defects.
  • Do not install any defective or questionable material.

Note: Once installed, planks are considered accepted by the installer. Please check carefully before proceeding.

3. Installation Conditions

A high-quality installation begins with a suitable subfloor and the right techniques for laying timber planks.

  • Substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within 3mm over 3m.
  • Timber substrates have moisture content under 14%.
  • Concrete substrates over 65% RH include a moisture barrier.
  • Planks are mixed from multiple packs for even distribution of colour and natural variation.

Nested lengths:

  • Avoid placing in the middle of open areas.
  • Use as starters or end boards, under cabinetry, and in cupboards.
  • If not usable in hidden areas, account for additional wastage or place under large furniture that is unlikely to be rearranged.

4. Owner Communication

Ensure the homeowner has the right information to care for and understand their timber flooring.

  • Owner has received the relevant care guide and approved cleaning products.
    View care resources
  • Owner understands the natural features of the supplied timber grade such as sapwood, knots, cracks, and medullary rays. The homeowner might want particularly characterful planks placed in hidden areas such as under cabinetry or in cupboards, so this conversation must be had prior to installation.
    Learn more about timber grades
  • Owner has viewed a sample of the current batch, noting potential colour variation.

Supporting Premium Timber Flooring Installations

By following this checklist, you’re not only protecting the integrity of the flooring but also helping the homeowner understand and appreciate the natural beauty and performance of their timber product.
